Students of Tribhuvan University and a few others participated in the election of the Free Student Union across the country on Sunday in a gap of 14 years. The elections were held largely peacefully although in a few campuses of the Kathmandu Valley and the districts outside the valley they could not be held because of disputes and clashes among students of rival organisations.
As almost all political parties have their student organisations on each campus, clashes and disputes in union elections have been common.
Like in national politics, the student organisations have forged alliance while contesting the elections. Still, the All Nepal National Free Student Union of the CPN-UML emerged victorious in the majority of the campuses while the NC’s Nepal Student Union emerged as the second and the CPN-Maoist’s All Nepal National Independent Student Union (Revolutionary) emerged as the third largest student force. However, it may take a few more days to publish the final results as the counting of votes under PR electoral system is still going on and the elections in the campuses where they could not hold on Sunday are rescheduled for March 26.
However, the student organisations which are blamed for spoiling the teaching-learning environment in the campuses did not raise the issues of improving the quality of education in TU campuses. They focused more on political issues and the facilities of the students.
The academic environments in many of the TU campuses have been ruined over the years. When classes often get disturbed, examinations are not held in time and it takes a year or more to publish annual results, many students tend to fly overseas for higher education. This is evident from the sharp fall of students enrolled on the government and even other campuses.
But the student organisations who contested the elections did not raise this issue in the elections.
