Proposed Mustang University drawn to controversy

The desert area in Mustang where India plans to establish a Buddhist university

Indian wish to construct a Buddhist college in the restricted and sensitive zone in Mustang has drawn flak from the political parties as well as people.

After KP Sharma Oli of the CPN-UML recently revealed that the government had allowed to set up of a Buddhist University in Mustang at the suggestion of India, the issue became a hotcake in the political circle.

The government refuted the news. Minister for Communication and Information Technology Rekha Sharma issued a statement terming the news reports based on Oli’s speech misleading. She said the government had not allowed anyone to set up the university.

Likewise, Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ also said that the government had received no plan or proposal to establish a Buddhist university in Mustang and no such plans were approved. Addressing an opening ceremony of the Solu Khola Hydroelectricity Project on Tuesday, he said that the news on Mustang University was just a rumour.

However, it was revealed later that chairman of a rural municipality in the district had sent a proposal to the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu seeking support to build a college. Interestingly, the chairman who had written the letter to the Indian Embassy is elected from the UML.

Obviously, Mustang is a sensitive zone bordering China. Allowing India to open a university in such a place cannot be imagined. It is not known how the issue was floated at a time when the country is preparing to elect a new president. This case shows how our leaders lack basic political culture and float any issue for political gains. Allowing to open a university in Mustang in the interest of a particular country will only irk our northern neighbor and no one should resort to such a suicidal act, which is against our foreign policy.
