A quest for saving the nation

EDITORIAL

In his greetings on the occasion of the 73rd Democracy Day, Falgun 7, former King Gyanendra has called upon the political parties to cooperate saying that he can no longer remain silent about the continuous erosion of the motherland.

The former King said that the political parties, which are indispensable for democracy and the royal institution with a long patriotic historical heritage, should not delay cooperation with mutual trust to save the nation.

“Even in the most adverse moments of the sad situation, we did not lose our temperance and patriotism and did not even leave the country. However, we cannot remain silent. During these years, the country’s long-term peace, stability and international respect and sovereignty have begun to suffer. Now, to save this country, there should be no delay in cooperating between political parties, which are indispensable for democracy, and the institution of the monarchy with a long patriotic historical legacy,” King Gyanendra said.

We are all aware that the country is passing through a critical phase. The political leaders of the day are in a race for pleasing their foreign bosses, which has created chaos in our standard foreign policy based on non-alignment and equidistance relations with all the friendly countries. The country’s financial position has been ruined to a greater extent. Our exports have declined and imports have inclined at an alarming level. Domestic revenue is solely based on customs duty on imports and remittances received from youths shedding sweat in the Gulf countries. Even the government is compelled to lend foreign debt to meet the general sector or say non-productive sector expenditure. The government is unable to manage the fund for infrastructural development projects. In conclusion, the economy is on the verge of collapse. Strange to note, the political leadership is less bothered about such caution continually alarmed by the financial sectors.

Eventually, the former King described the worst scenario in the country. The only remedy for saving the nation is to scrap the present political structure by introducing a sustainable democratic political system having a check and balance mechanism.
