MCC and the residents of Shankharapur-3

By Nirmal P. Acharya

Residents of Shankharapur Municipality Ward No. 3 in Kathmandu staged a protest demanding the shifting of the electric transmission line (substation) under construction there. The protest emerged during the construction of the National Pride project Upper Tamakoshi substation and MCC substation.

I wonder if the new Prime Minister Prachanda has been notified regarding this incident.

The new PM is a famous leader of the Maoist and should know Mao’s teachings by heart. Remember Mao has a teaching that is “From the masses to the masses.” Accordingly, I suggest that the new PM visit the residents of Shankharapur-3, to listen to the voices of the masses, deepen the understanding and judgment about the MCC, and inform the residents of Shankharapur-3 of his intention. I really hope the new PM goes to Shankharapur-3 to practice Mao’s teachings and see what happens.

I remember Mao also taught that “the masses, only the masses, are the real heroes.” However, it has come to notice that the new PM is busy meeting with all the big shots every day. But if these big men do not represent the interests of the masses and do not respond to the voices of the masses, then they are really just trees without roots, water without a source, and their weight is not as important as it seems. Therefore, it is highly recommended that the new PM take time out this weekend to visit the residents of Shankharapur-3 and chat with them about the MCC, with the mindset of recognising their heroic status.

I still remember Mao’s teaching that “American imperialism and all reactionaries are paper tigers.” In 1950, China was at the beginning of the founding of the People’s Republic, and the country was not stable. Yet, Mao dared to confront the US-led coalition of 16 nations in Korea. As a result, in the early 1970s, when Sino-US relations broke the ice, it was US President Nixon who flew to Beijing and visited Mao in Zhongnanhai, instead of Mao flying to Washington DC and visiting Nixon in the White House. The new PM should look back at this history and visit the residents of Shankharapur-3 to draw some courage to say no to the MCC.
