Nepal Airlines holds strategic significance in Nepal, a landlocked country, but the leaders are working in the interests of the foreign airlines by squeezing Nepal Airlines from all sides.
For example, just recently, by cutting down the Delhi flights of the Nepali flag carrier, the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) under the instruction of the Tourism Minister, has permitted an Indian airline for operating more flights in the Delhi-Kathmandu sector. The Tourism Minister is planning to give the ground handling of the international airports to other private airlines, which is currently being handled by Nepal Airlines. The government intends to close down Nepal Airlines, which is a blunder.
The government should run labour incentive industries in the country employing our youths. Even if the government industries cannot earn a profit or minimum profit, they should be operated for stopping our youths from going abroad for dirty and dangerous work. If assigned professional management, the government-run industries can also earn profit. When the government-run banks are making a profit, why not the government-run industries make a profit? The only thing is that the government should cooperate with such industries by not intervening in its business. From the success of Qatar Air and Ethiopian Airlines, Nepal can learn a lesson.
