Ruling parties still unable to settle parliament seat sharing

By Our Reporter

It seems the present ruling coalition will not last till the November 20 elections. It is because of their inability to conclude the seat-sharing issue despite holding marathon meetings lasting for weeks.

On Monday, they held a meeting for 12 hours at the official residence of Prime Minister and Nepali Congress president Sher Bahadur Deuba, but the meeting could not fruitful. It was reported that the parties were unable to decide 75 of the 165 seats of the House of Representatives as the NC, CPN (Unified Socialist) and the Janata Samajwadi Party Nepal staked their claims on the same constituencies. When the parties sought more seats than they deserved, the seat-sharing issue has become knottier.

On Monday, they decided to hold another meeting on Tuesday but again the meeting failed to sort out the differences.

It is reported that the meeting has not been fruitful because of the stance of the Janata Samajwadi Party Nepal, which has sought 25 seats while other parties are ready to give it only 18. Its chairman Upendra Yadav left earlier meetings in the middle as he was not happy with the way the meeting moved.

But the crux of the problem is that Yadav wants his party should form the government in Madhes no matter how many seats he is granted for the federal parliament. Of the governments formed in seven provinces in 2017, only in Madhes the alliance of the UML and Maoist Centre was unable to form the government and Yadav’s JSP-N led the government there. Now Yadav wants a guarantee that his party should be made able to form government in Madhes. If NC and other parties assure Yadav of their government in Madhes, the issue of seat sharing will be solved, said sources.
