The Mahakali Treaty the full awkward nomenclature of which is “Treaty between His Majesty’s Government of Nepal and the Government of India concerning the integrated development of the Mahakali River including Sarada Barrage, Tanakpur Barrage and Pancheshwar Project” has of late, developed into a highly uncertain game of political football.
As much can, surely, be made out from the spate of newspaper articles, debates and symposia on the subject, even as the day draws near for the opening of the tenth session of parliament where, according to a recent disclosure by Prime Minister Share Bahadur Deuba, the important document would be tabled for ratification.
