Voting on Citizenship Bill: 135 Yes, 60 No

Kathmandu, 18 August: The Citizenship Bill, which was sent back  to the House of Representatives (HoR)by President Bidya Devi Bhandari for reconsideration, has been endoresed without any amendments or concerns raised by the Presient.

Among the 195 lawmakers present in the meeting of the HoR toady, 135 votes were cast in favour of the Bill and 60 votes were cast against it. The President returned the Citizenship Bill back to the  HoR on August 14 asking it to reconsider the Bill, citing issues such as legalization of marriage, territorial identity, and women’s self-esteem.

After 28 lawmakers of the main opposition CPN-UML demanded to take the bill to the process of vote division, and cannot be passed by voice votes alone.  Speaker Agni Sapkota  agreed to it take the bill to voting.No one remained neutral in today’s voting.
