NC largest party in terms of popular vote: EC

At a time when the CPN-UML leaders have been claiming that their party garnered the largest popular vote in the recently concluded local poll, the Election Commission’s latest report showed the claims of the UML was baseless.

The election body on Tuesday officially said that the Nepali Congress emerged as the largest party in the May 13 local poll in terms of seats won and in popular vote.

Unveiling the details of the local level election on Tuesday, the Election Commission (EC) said that the Nepali Congress held the first position in terms of popular vote in the local level election.

The EC has calculated the popular votes of the parties based on the votes received by their ward chairpersons.

According to the data released by the EC, Nepali Congress received 144,591 more votes than the CPN-UML that emerged as the second largest party in the local poll.

According to the EC, Nepali Congress received 3,956,193 votes while the UML garnered 3,811, 602 votes. “The Nepali Congress received 34.28 per cent votes in the local poll while the CPN-UML got 33.03 per cent,” the EC said.

Similarly, the CPN (Maoist Centre), which has forged an electoral alliance with the Nepali Congress and three other parties, stands third in popular vote by garnering 1,503,247 votes, which is 13.03 per cent.

Likewise, the Janata Samajwadi Party-Nepal (JSP-N) and CPN (Unified Socialist) were in the fourth and fifth positions respectively in terms of the popular. The JSP-N received 577,380 votes (5 %) and the CPN (Unified Socialist) received 422,737 votes (3.66%).

Likewise, Rastriya Prajatantra Party got 364,160 votes and stood sixth.
