Govt withdraws Citizenship Bill to replace with a new one

The government has decided to withdraw the controversial Citizenship Bill from the House of Representatives.

A meeting of the Council of Ministers held on Tuesday decided to withdraw the citizenship bill.

The then KP Sharma Oli-led government registered the Citizenship Bill in the House on August 7, 2018. The State Affairs and Good Governance Committee of the House of Representatives had discussed the bill for nearly two years and submitted its report to the House of Representatives.

The government has decided to withdraw the bill while the bill was under consideration in the House of Representatives.

There is a controversy in the bill over whether to grant citizenship to a foreign woman who marries a Nepali man immediately or after seven years.
