The Prabhu Shumsher and Raji Rana Trust has decided to take guardianship of Chimpu and Champa, two chimpanzees, bearing all expenses for them.

The Trust, under the guardianship programme of the animals in the General Zoo, has decided to provide one million rupees a year for food and other expenses for Chimpu and Champa.

Chimpu and Champa are being kept at an airconditioned home in the Zoo. One person has been assigned for taking care of the two chimpanzees.

The two chimpanzees were recovered while they were being trafficked to India via Nepal around five years ago by a group of smugglers. They were rescued by the Nepal Police and handed over to the General Zoo on 17 October 2017. Champa’s age was around nine months and Chimpu was 4/5 months old during that time.

According to Rachana Shah, chief, General Zoo, different personalities have taken guardianship to 127 animals in the Zoo. Although different personalities and organizations have decided for burdening the cost of the animals for one year, the Prabhu Shumsher Raji Rana Trust has decided to continue to bear the expenses of Chimpu and Champa for further years too.
