Nepali foreign policy dilemma

On/Off the record

By P.R. Pradhan

The globe is again heading towards polarization and the new cold war era is in the offing. If the global powers will not maintain patience, there is the possibility of a third world war. The Ukrainian President has already hinted at such a threat. The Russian invasion on Ukraine has been prolonged, which was beyond the expectation of Russia. Understandably, the American and Western support to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has contributed to prolonging the Russian engagement in the Ukraine war.

This is the era of propaganda war and the Western media has won the war as Russian President Vladimir Putin is being projected as the Adolf Hitler, whereas, Ukrainian President Zelenskyy is being projected as a war hero but the Ukrainian people have become the victim of war. According to a recent report, more than 3 million Ukrainian people have left their country and taken shelter in different countries. Above 2500 civilians have been killed and many Ukrainian cities have almost been destroyed. Life in the war-hit area is horrible as there is no electricity, no food, and no water. The USA, by provoking the Ukrainian President, has become successful to engage Russia and Ukraine in war with the plan of engaging the two countries — which were under the USSR in the past – in a war. The further plan of the US is to drag China into this war. If possible, the US also wants to drag Europe into this war. The sole interest of the Americans is to engage maximum countries in this war and supply its arms and strengthen the US economy.

The American economy is based on war as its economy will flourish along with war – either it was in Afghanistan or Iraq or else. All the Western media including BBC and CNN had claimed that Iraq was empowered with WMD (weapons of mass destruction). The Americans attacked on Iraq and assassinated Saddam Hessian but never recovered WMD from any part of Iraq even after decades of the war on Iraq.

The war on Iraq was aimed at destroying the Muslim civilization. The war on Afghanistan was aimed at separating East Asia from Central Asia. The next American target is China and destroying one of the oldest civilizations in Asia. The Russia-Ukraine war engagement is the process of provoking China for war. Maybe, the other efforts will be made from the Indo-Pacific belt. If the Americans will be able to defuse China, then the next target will be India, a centre for ancient Asian civilization. India, perhaps, has not understood the grand design of the USA.

We don’t support the Russian war on Ukraine. Nepal, being a tiny nation between the two giant militarily powerful countries, can never support the Russian military invasion of Ukraine. The majority of the Nepali intellectuals have expressed worry and supported the Ukrainian President on this war. It is reasonable as from morning to evening, we all have relied on the Western media. According to the Western media reports, Ukraine is a suffering country.

Can the USA accept the opening of the Russian military camp in Mexico or Canada or other countries bordered by the USA? If the USA will approve such a decision, this scribe will believe, Putin was wrong and he is a killer. Otherwise, the USA and the NATO nations and the EU, instead of exhibiting the plight and sufferings of the Ukrainian people, should ensure Russia by addressing its security concern. Yes, these countries should advocate for the peaceful existence of Ukraine by ensuring that they would not allow NATO or EU membership to Ukraine and Ukraine should remain as a non-aligned nation or say a buffer nation in between Russia and Europe.

Nepal’s geopolitical location is also very sensitive. Nepal is located in between two giant and militarily powerful nations. Knowingly or unknowingly, our Prime minister Sher Bahadur Deuba and the supreme leaders of the major political parties are trying to become the new incarnation of Ukrainian President Zelenskyy by violating the foreign policy norms guided by the principle of non-alignment.

The two neighbours are in a position of face-off on the India-China border. In such a situation, the significance of Nepal’s commitment to the non-alignment principle has become more important. Saying bluntly, Nepal can safeguard her sovereignty and independence only by remaining as a buffer nation or a barrier between the two giant nations. Nepal neither should be a nation under American influence nor Indian influence nor Chinese influence.

Nepal’s proposal for being a Zone of Peace, which was already recognized by above 116 nations, has been removed from the 1990 constitution by those India-puppet political leaders without an explanation. If we desire to cross the limit of the non-alignment principle, we must empower our security strength, otherwise, it would be suicidal if we try to jump elsewhere. We saw, neither the Americans nor the Europeans sent their force in support of Ukraine, however, they have provided sophisticated arms to Ukraine, so that the war could be prolonged. This is the real game taking place in the Russian-Ukraine war and this is a lesson to learn for our leaders.
