Dr Upendra Gautam, known to be one of the noted China experts in Nepal and also the secretary-general of the China Study Center, Nepal, said that the visit of the Chinese State Councilor Wang Yi is important.
When People’s Review asked about the significance of the visit at the present juncture, Gautam said: “The visit is important. It is the second leg of the visit of China`s State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi to the South Asian neighbourhood this year”.
“The visit is taking place at a time when candid and work-oriented dialogue between the neighbours has acquired critical significance. Ukraine-Russia conflict, the rise of a new pragmatism in India`s foreign relations and religion-centred domestic politics and the security-orientation of international cooperation in the region add much value to the visit”, Gautam opined.

Gautam further suggested tabling Nepal’s old celebrated Zone of Peace proposal as a comprehensive and sustainable mechanism of security cooperation regarding the Ukraine-Russia conflict.
He said, “Given China`s five-point agenda to solve the Ukraine-Russia conflict where a comprehensive and sustainable mechanism of security cooperation is vitally central, Nepal should put on the table its old celebrated proposal to get Nepal declared a zone of peace which 116 countries including China and the US have recognized”.
“The second priority action for Nepal is closer, well-coordinated and meaningful cooperation in BRI projects”, Gautam observed.
“Nepal is mentioned notably in China´s 2021 white paper on international development and partnership. China`s 14th plan 2021-25 stresses on Tibet-South Asia connectivity corridor. Nepal should demonstrate an uncompromising commitment to getting linked on this corridor through an environment-friendly railway line in the next seven years”.
