As the nation celebrates His Majesty King Birendra’s auspicious 50th birth anniversary, it is inevitable that our thoughts, too should go out the Nepalese monarch. The 23 years or so that he has been on the throne have been momentous years for Nepal. That time span, for instance, witnessed both the development as well the demise of the party less panchayat system which King Mahendra introduced to end the mayhem and confusion of Nepal’s first experiment with multiparty democracy in 1959-1960.
Though it is probably too early to pass a final, objective judgment of the panchayat years, it is To the credit of King Birendra that he put an end to the confrontation that developed in April 1990 between the people and the ancient institution of the monarchy and thus saved the country from disintegration.
