When the nation fails

On/Off the Record

By P.R. Pradhan

The reality of today’s Nepal is that the voice of those who are acting against the nation’s interests has become loud and the voice of those who love the nation has been suppressed. Since the 2006 April uprising, those who signed the 12-point Delhi agreement, are continuously enjoying the power. It has already been 16 years since we have adopted “loktantra”, the Indo-West agenda carried by Maoist leaders particularly Pushpakamal Dahal and Baburam Bhattarai. The tenure of above one and a half-decade for a nation is a long period. If the Maoist agendas were for the nation and people’s prosperity, that would have already taken a course. Unfortunately, we are witnessing the downfall of the nation in all sectors. Our economy is facing a serious crisis; our foreign policy has become very weak; all the organs of the state have already been destroyed; security organs have become weak; we have been witnessing prolonged political instability and the nation has become the playground of the foreign powers. Our leaders have become the dealers of foreign powers and domestic mafias. To sum up, the nation is on the verge of collapse. The foreigners’ dealers are developing grounds either to initiate a civil war or to hand over Nepali sovereignty to the foreigners! Understandably, when those dealers don’t want to recall the contribution of the founder of the nation but worship their foreign gods; when they cannot speak against the illegal occupation of the Nepali territory, it makes clear their real intention.

The present political system has already been failed, perhaps, those dealers (leaders) have accomplished the job assigned by their foreign bosses. If we continue to practice the very failed system, surely, we are going to meet an accident and perhaps the disappearance of this sovereign and independent country gifted by our brave ancestors! We see a hopeless picture of the country as there is a syndicate of a few outdated leaders who enjoy the power turn by turn. It is an open secret that they are self-centered, openly practicing nepotism, favouritism, sycophancy, rampant corruption, blah…blah…blah!

The need of the hour is to scrap the constitution to rescue the nation from the present crisis without any delay and initiate action against those who are responsible for creating the present chaos including practicing corruption and commission.

A dictatorial rule doesn’t sound good but the commoners believe, a strong dictator is needed to give the right course to the nation. Be that as it may, a change is obvious to save the nation!

We cannot hope better for the country and the countrymen from the present coalition government. We had hoped much from the K.P. Sharma Oli-led government enjoying virtually a two-thirds majority. When we were informed about Oli was reading the biography of Chinese Chairman Mao, President Xi Jinping, Singaporean leader Lee Kuan Yew, among others, we thought that Oli was going to transform this country. Unfortunately, he wasted three years’ tenure. Either he didn’t wish to contribute to the nation or he could not break the chain of those business mafias, or one cannot do anything better under the present system, it is clear. He could not write his name in the history book, rather, became a failed leader!

Now, we believe, it is a fool to expect better from those already tasted leaders, in the meantime, we have not been able to find any new leader. An odd trend has been established in Nepali politics. The political leaders, instead of being responsible to the people and the voters, are seen in an unholy race for pleasing their foreign bosses. This trend has further intensified. Now, taking benefit of the situation, different foreign powers are demonstrating their influence in the country. The American grant project Millenium Challenge Corporation can be taken as an example. Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba and Maoist Center chair Pushpakamal Dahal Prachanda have publicly said that they are facing pressure for rectification of MCC, a 500 million US dollars project. They have written a secret letter even by forgetting their protocol. What can we hope for from such foreign puppets?
