On/Off the Record

By P.R. Pradhan
Presently, Nepal is passing through a difficult phase. The nation has become solely dependent on other countries. Nothing is possible without a foreigners’ support. The economy is the backbone of a nation, unfortunately, the country’s all economic indicators are negative.
Wrong policy, corrupt mentality, and leaderships’ interests in serving foreign powers have taken the country towards the present worst state.
In the name of democracy and now loktantra, we invited direct foreign intervention in our domestic affairs, which, our leaders and foreigners’ agents are advocating as an “offensive move”!
In fact, we have adopted the Prachanda path, that is republicanism, federalism, and secularism. This Prachanda path was drafted in the foreign land in the interests of the foreigners. The 12-point Delhi agreement is the base of this Prachanda path.
Indeed, we have another path formulated by the Great King Prithivi Narayan Shah. Divine Counsel, formulated by the founder of modern Nepal, is our native path which is the principal guideline for Nepal. When we scrapped the principal guideline, we are witnessing the present worst situation of the country.
In his Dibbya Upadesh (Divine Counsel), the Great King had defined Nepal’s foreign, economic, security, cultural, social and other strategies, which are still pragmatic and significant.
If the government had properly adopted the Divine Counsel, the nation would have not only become prosperous but also a strong nation!
Instead of strengthening local industries, we chose to make Nepal an import-based country; instead of harnessing natural resources, we chose to import luxury goods from foreign countries; instead of scientifically farming our fertile land, we chose to send our youths abroad. Our governments under the instruction of their foreign bosses discouraged local industries and farmers.
We were taught that sugarcane is a cash crop but farmers are unable to get payment of their sugarcane supply to the sugar industries for years. Farmers are unable to get fertilizer during the farming season. These are not the problem witnessed not in a particular year but have become a permanent problem. Farmers don’t get the price of their products. Although those leaders advocate socialism, they are serving the interests of those businessmen, brokers, and commission agents.
In the recent national convention of the Maoist Center, its chairman Pushpakamal Dahal Prachanda was questioned that why he was staying at the building of a controversial construction contractor. He was also questioned by his party cadres for spending luxury lifestyle and non-transparent source of income. Some of the participants at the national convention even demanded to constitute a committee to investigate the property gained by their leaders.
This is not the problem seen in the Maoist Center but all the political parties are heavily indulged in corruption practice. Politics has become a profession to earn money overnight without any investment. In Nepal, everything is deteriorating but the only thing that has been flourished is the lifestyle of the political leaders.
King Prithivi Narayan had said corruption and commission are serious crimes. Both recipients and providers of bribes are equally responsible for committing the crime. Today, we can experience daylight loot and open corruption that taking place in the country. Sure, these are the gift of the present political system which is known as loktantra.
Until 2006 political change, King Prithivi Narayan Shah’s birth anniversary on 27 Ppous was being observed as the national unity day. Along with the adoption of the present loktantra, Krishna Prasad Shitaula, then home minister, known to be South Block’s confidant, without any logic and reason, scrapped the national holiday and national unity day event. Needless to say, in whose interests loktantra with full of anomalies was introduced in Nepal!
Be that as it may, commoners are aware of those traitors and foreign agents. Therefore, commoners have started to observe the national unity day at the people’s level. Even today, the Day is being observed by the general public by organizing different programmes.
To conclude, if we want a prosperous and vibrant Nepal, let’s follow King Prithivi Narayan Shah identified path by scrapping the present Prachanda path!
