Is Deuba encouraging groupism in NC?

By Our Reporter

Nepali Congress president Sher Bahadur Deuba, who emerged more powerful from the party’s 14th general convention, seems to have forgotten the aspirations of the NC voters and activists by trying to undermine the strength of Dr. Shekhar Koirala, who secured 40 per cent votes on his own in the elections.

This was evident from the fact that he ranked Koirala in the lower position than those who lost the election securing fewer votes than Koirala got. Again, Deuba did not think it necessary to consult Koirala while picking candidates for the National Assembly elections. Similarly, Deuba nominated 13 central committee members from among those who lost the internal elections and those who did not file a candidacy. But surprisingly, he picked only those who voted for him.

He nominated Sujata Koirala and Bijay Gachchhadar who lost the post of vice president but he did not pick Chandra Bhandari who got more votes than Koirala. He also did not nominate Mindendra Rijal who lost the election to the general secretary but nominated Prakash Sharan Mahat and Pradeep Paudel although they had the elections of general secretary. These activities prompted Dr. Koirala to call a separate meeting on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Instead of consulting with Dr. Koirala, Deuba tried to woo Ram Chandra Paudel by offering two of the six NA candidates to the leaders close to Paudel. What Deuba is doing clearly shows that he is now promoting groupism in the party in a bid to weaken Koirala. And if Deuba does not correct his activities, his acts are likely to be costly during elections, because competent, honest and talented party workers and leaders are now with Koirala. Even those who have been giving votes to NC forever think Koirala as their true leader.
