Contrary to general expectations, Prime Minister Share Bahadur Deuba in the supposedly “freehand” expansion of his council of Ministers last week has accorded two high visibility portfolios water resources and foreign to RPP’s Pashupati Shumshare Rana and Prakashchandra Lohani respectively.
On the face of it, that would seem to represent solid gains for the RPP. But are they so? According to some diplomatic observers, those short term gains could in fact translate into long term losses.
As they explain it, although it would appear that the NC has made a tremendous sacrifice in handing over those prestigious portfolios to the RPP, over the long haul the RPP’s association with the NC-led coalition’s foreign and water resources policy could seriously erode its “nationalistic” credentials.
