Loktantra at risk?

On/Off the Record

By P.R. Pradhan

Maoist Center supremo Pushpakamal Dahal Prachanda is time and again saying that loktantra achieved through a revolution is at risk from the regressive elements who are attempting to launch a counter-revolution. Baburam Bhattarai and Madhav Kumar Nepal also see a serious threat to loktantra in the country.

“There is the threat of abduction of loktantra, therefore, we have to remain alert,” these leaders are saying time and again.

“We won’t allow the regressive elements abducting the people’s long-awaited achievements,” they are lauding.

What is loktantra, today, we all are aware of it. What the nation achieved from loktantra, perhaps nothing! First of all, loktantra is not a Nepali word. This is the word coined after the 12-point agreement. Otherwise, we were practised to say democracy. Maybe, democracy and loktantra are not the same. Loktantra has become synonymous with all kinds of anomalies including rampant corruption, commission, daylight loot and crime – rape and murder — lawlessness, nepotism, favouritism, bad governance, leaders organizing planned loot on the government coffer, flourishing of traitors and foreign agents, political anarchism, among others!

And leaders from Girija Prasad Koirala to Pushpakamal Dahal, Baburam Bhattarai and Madhav Nepal, K.P. Sharma Oli, Sher Bahadur Deuba and the parties they are representing are solely responsible for creating such a gloomy picture of the country under the loktantra.

We have a five-party alliance government constituted through the Supreme Court verdict. Is the government functioning, or are the parties working for the betterment of the nation and the people? Earlier, there was virtually a two-thirds majority government led by K.P. Sharma Oli and partnered with Prachanda. The government didn’t function as a majority government. Within three years, the government was toppled down through an unnatural alliance.

A political system is a vehicle to carry the country and people towards prosperity and political leaders are the drivers of the vehicle. If the drivers chose the wrong highway, we cannot reach the destination and also if the vehicle is not in the condition to move, the driver alone cannot drive the vehicle to the destination.

In the Nepali context, both the drivers and the vehicle have become non-functional. The vehicle movement is determined by the condition of the road. If we plan to drive a luxury car off-road, it is not possible. We need a four-wheel-drive off-road vehicle to run on such roads. A good driver and a good vehicle suitable to the road condition can only reach the vehicle to the destination.

An accident is inevitable if we rely on the drivers presently running the vehicle in a poor condition. To avoid the accident, we should change the vehicle and the drivers as well.

The country, through a conspiracy, adopted the Maoist agendas. The Nepali Congress, UML and other political parties ran behind the Maoist agenda. As the agendas were wrong, we have become a sufferer. We can reach nowhere from the present path but our future could be more worst than now if we rely on the present leadership and present political priorities. Financially, the present system has become very costly as the government is compelled to lend money to run the system.

The nation’s real picture is that youths are going abroad for low-quality jobs as they are unable to get a job within the country. Farmers are unable to get fertilizer. They are compelled to compete with the Indian agro-products heavily subsidized by the Indian government. The nation is facing a continuous trade deficit at an alarming level, in the meantime, the foreign currency reserve has declined to a negative level. The only thing that is flourishing in the country is the industry of politics run by looters. The political leaders are either serving the foreign powers or the local mafias. The governance is under the control of the foreign powers and the local mafias.

Presently, we are inside a dark tunnel, where, there is no sign of light. If there is no outlet to get out from the dark tunnel, we have to return to the point from where we had started the journey. This is the only option left for us. The leaders are making fools to us. The question is that how long we wish to become fooled! If we don’t want to become fool further, let’s think about a change and that change should be for safeguarding national sovereignty, independence, and prosperity!

If we want to remain as a fool, I have nothing to say and those looters will continue to rule on us!
