Mangal Siddhi Manandar, vice chairman of the National Planning Commission launched Kathmandu’s first fleet of pollution-free electric vehicles. Participations of the inaugural ceremony rode the smokeless Safa Tempos from American Club, Phora Durbar to the statue of King Mahendra at the King’s Way and back to the Club. The battery-operated tempos are launched in Kathmandu under the initiation of the Global Resources Institute (GRI), an America based NGO. Eight smokeless tempos have been introduced after several test operations and redesigning at the request of the Kathmandu Municipality. Frist of these tempos was converted from diesel to electric in September 1993.
