Chief justice Rana under pressure to tender resignation

Kathmandu, 25 October: After being exposed to demanding a share in the government, chief justice Cholendra Shumsher Rana is facing a moral problem. A group of 14 judges denied attending the full court called by CJ Rana for today. There are a total of 21 judges in the Supreme Court. Some judges closed to him have also advised CJ Rana to tender resignation as the situation has become worst against him.

The forum of ex-SC judges had earlier asked CJ Rana to tender resignation for saving the Court from controversy.

Political groupism in the court:

As the judges are being appointed based on political bhagbanda, they are found loyal to the concerned party and divided into different political groups.

CJ Rana tried to take credit for obliging the leaders of the alliance partners by giving the verdict in favour of them and tried to take his share in the government. In fact, other judges in the constitutional bench had given political verdict by empowering Sher Bahadur Deuba to the post of Prime Minister.

The role of the BAR association and senior legal practitioners were also highly influenced by partisan politics. Rejection on the assignment of the judges in the constitutional bench by the legal practitioners was odd in the history of the judiciary in Nepal.

As politics has already been entered into the Supreme Court, the disease cannot be cured only from ousting of CJ Rana, say legal experts.

First of all, the political parties should end the practice of appointing judges through a political bhagbanda, they believe.
