Census will be conducted in India occupied Kalapani territory also

Kathmandu, 9 September: The government is planning to conduct a population census in Kalapani, Lipulek and Limpiyadhura of Darchula, India encroached territory. After the release of the new political map incorporating the Nepali territory in May last year, there were fears that it would not be included in the national census.

The Central Statistics Department confirmed that the national census, which was halted due to the Covid-19 epidemic, would be re-conducted nationwide, also in the India encroached territory in Kalapani, from 15 September, Director General Nebalal Shrestha said.

If possible, the census will be conducted in the India encroached territory in physical presence, otherwise, it will be conducted through satellite technology.

Shrestha, Director General of the department said that the census in that area is sensitive and the Department alone cannot conduct the census in the India occupied territory. “It’s a very sensitive issue. We are in constant discussions with the local, state and central governments. What is possible, we will find out”, he said.
