Kathmandu, 16 July: Newly appointed Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba has to take the vote of confidence within one month of his appointment to the post.
The Madhav Nepal faction in the UML has to vote for Deuba to manage 136 votes. Since the unity efforts are on in the UML, it has not become clear that the Nepal faction will vote for Deuba or not. Even if Madhav Nepal wishes to vote for Deuba, a group within his camp is putting pressure on Nepal for not supporting the NC-led government formed by toppling down the UML government. It is said that some of the MPs in the Nepal camp may change the camp if Nepal decides to vote for Deuba or decides to quit the UML and start a new party.
Again, there is the possibility of dismissing eight MPs elected through the proportional election presently sided with Madhav Nepal by K.P. Oli by assigning new faces as MPs.
If happens so, there will be only around six MPs in the Nepal camp, which may not be enough to manage 136 votes for Deuba.
If the Mahanta Thakur faction in JSP will support Deuba, he can manage the necessary majority in the parliament.
Be that as it may, if Deuba will manage the necessary votes, he will remain as the PM for 15 months. Otherwise, if Deuba fails to secure a majority in the parliament, he will have to dissolve the House and announce general elections within six months. In this case, he will remain as the PM until the election of the next parliament, i.e. for six months.
