Lessons for free and fair polls

The Nepali Congress party has been rejected by the people at the mid-term General Elections imposed upon the country by Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala to seek a fresh mandate. Though the people have given no party a majority, the CPN (UML) has emerged as the largest party, the congress having been reduced to a second position. The outcome establishes that there has been an anti-Congress wave in the country. The opposition parties had fought the elections not only against the Congress party but virtually against His Majesty’s Government headed by Girija Prasad Koirala. This is because Koirala blatantly misused state machinery and resources — the army, the police, the bureaucracy, the official media and other recourses — for his party’s electioneering purposes.
