One of the six units of the Upper Tamakoshi Hydropower Project has started generating electricity from Monday.
The first unit of the project with a total capacity of 456 MW has started generating 76 MW of electricity commercially.
Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli inaugurated the project constructed in Bigu Rural Municipality-1 of Dolakha district under domestic investment virtually from Kathmandu on Monday evening.
This is the first largest hydropower project constructed under the domestic investment of the country.
About 76 megawatts of electricity generated from a unit of the total 456-megawatt hydropower project has been connected to the national grid through Gongar-Khimti-Dhalkebar 220 KV transmission line on Monday.
The power generated by the Upper Tamakoshi project will reach Dhalkebar from Gongar via the New Khimti substation and it is connected to the national transmission system from the Dhalkebar substation.
The project has planned to start production from other units gradually. It has planned to connect 152 MW, including the first unit to the national transmission line within the current fiscal year.
The project, which faced various technical complications, has been completed twice as long as the target period. The project, which started construction in 2067 BS, has been completed six years later than its deadline.
Although the initial estimated cost was Rs. 35 billion, the cost has gone up to above Rs. 80 billion due to fluctuations in the value of the US dollar, interest rate and other factors.
