Nepal has witnessed a sharp rise in COVID-19 cases and fatalities related to it in the past one week. The daily cases which were around 50 a day three weeks ago have now climbed to over 550.
However, the government seems least bothered to contain the rising cases by introducing effective measures. Schools and colleges are running classes in physical presences, crowds in the market places, public vehicles and roads make one believe that the nation is totally free from virus. Schools students are found to be the main carriers of the virus after those returning from India. But the government is not willing to control these crowds.
When experts have suggested shutting down schools, the government has not decided this, instead, the government is supporting the businesses of private academic institutions at the cost of public health. The private schools want to collect fees, and the government is backing their business interest as if businessmen were more important than the young students’ life.
On Monday, as many as 559 new cases of the COVID-19 were recorded across the country in the past 24 hours. The number was 303 on Sunday, 337 on Saturday, 288 on Friday, 332 on Thursday and 298 on Wednesday.
The Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP) added 13 new fatalities in its update with eight of them on Monday alone. With this, the fatalities from COVID-19 reached 3,053.
As per the update of the MoHP, 496 new cases were detected in 4,378 Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) tests and 63 in antigen tests on Monday.
With this, the national COVID-19 case tally has reached 280,524.
As the COVID-19 cases increase, health experts are warning that the situation could get worse if precautionary measures like closing schools and public transport were not adopted.
