President Bidya Devi Bhandari paid a two-day official visit to Bangladesh on Monday and Tuesday.
She returned home Tuesday evening after wrapping her visit.
Upon her arrival at the Tribhuvan International Airport, Foreign Minister Pradeep Kumar Gyawali, who had accompanied the President during her visit briefed media about the visit.
According to him, Nepal and Bangladesh have signed four memorandums of understanding (MoUs) and letters of exchanges including one on the designation of Rohanpur-Singhabad railway route as an additional transit route for the movement of traffic-in-transit between the two countries during the two-day state visit of President Bhandari.
The two countries signed four MoUs and letters of exchanges, including strengthening sanitary and phytosanitary (SPS) cooperation, said Minister Gyawali at the press conference organised at Tribhuvan International Airport upon arrival of the President at the Tribhuvan International Airport.
The two countries also agreed in principle to harmonise the standards for SPS and technical barriers to trade (TBT) between Nepal’s Department of Food Technology and Quality Control and its Bangladeshi counterpart.
In addition to SPS cooperation, the two countries also signed Letters of Exchange on the designation of Rohanpur-Singhabad railway route as an additional transit route for movement of traffic-in-transit between Nepal and Bangladesh and for the third country transit trade, according to Foreign Minister Gyawali. Likewise, MoU on promoting tourism cooperation and cultural exchange programme for 2022-2025 was also inked.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh has also expressed its interest in signing a power trade agreement with Nepal. Bangladesh has been seeking to purchase around 9,000 MW of electricity from Nepal by 2040.
During her visit, the President paid homage to the martyrs of Bangladesh by visiting the National Martyrs’ Memorial at Savar, Bangladesh and attended the centenary celebrations of Bangabandhu’s birth.
Similarly, President Bhandari expressed her views on the topic of “Nepal-Bangladesh Relations and the Birth Centenary of Bangabandhu” on the occasion of Bangabandhu’s birth centenary on Monday evening.
President Bhandari held bilateral talks with the President of Bangladesh in Dhaka on Monday. She also held discussions with the Prime Minister of Bangladesh on various issues.
The President attended a state banquet hosted by the President of Bangladesh in her honour on Monday evening at Bangabandhu Bhawan.
