PM Oli in confrontation mood, targets Madhav Nepal, Rawal, Bhusal in UML
Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli looks adamant to eliminate his rivals from the CPN-UML. It is evident from his move to seek clarifications from four senior leaders including Madhdav Kumar Nepal who led the party for 14 years preparing a solid base of the party, which made it possible for Oli to become the Prime Minister now.
Although it has been only four years since Oli became chairman of the UML, and reached power after allying with the Maoist Centre in the elections, his move to punish senior leaders only exposes his dictatorial nature.
Now after kicking Pushpa Kamal Dahal and his party out of the ring through a controversial court verdict, Oli has shamelessly targeted senior leader Nepal, Jhalanath Khanal, Bhim Rawal, Surendra Pande and Ghanashyam Bhusal misusing the state power.
Although Nepal was enjoying a majority in the elected office bearers and members in the central committee of the party, Oli unilaterally dismissed them, because rule and regulation matter less for Oli. He even dared to dissolve the House although the Constitution did not let him do that. Had Oli been a moral leader, he should have resigned from the post of Prime Minister after the Supreme Court reinstated the House clearly stating that he had violated the Constitution.
Instead of resigning, he has been trying to make the reinstated House dysfunctional and cleanse the party be removing all leaders who opposed his unilateral decisions. He has replaced the long time comrades of UML with newcomers from the Maoist-Centre.
Now it seems he has a single goal to eliminate all his foes from the party, and he has begun it by asking Nepal, Rawal, Bhusal and Surendra Pandey to submit clarifications on their activities.
However, if Oli is gets removed from the government, he will be true losers because most of those who are backing him are impolite and rude in their attitudes.
Meanwhile, Madhav Kumar Nepal said on Tuesday that the UML was theirs and they were not in favour of splitting the party.
Addressing a national gathering of students close to his group, leader Nepal said they were in favour of keeping the party unity intact.
He also accused party chairman Oli of orienting towards the dissolution of the party.
Although Nepal claimed that he would not breach the party, it looks impossible for him to stay with Oli and his coteries, who do not show respect to anyone in and outside the party. It means the UML will split soon or later. And if the Supreme Court corrected its decision to invalidate the formation of the Nepal Communist Party, Nepal and Pushpa Kamal Dahal will be together again. The Maoist Centre has decided to appeal against the controversial decision. And if he SC does not correct the decision, the split of UML cannot be prevented.
Nepal said that their fight was not against the party chairman Oli but his tendency and accused Oli of being a faction leader in the party from the very beginning.
The main principle of the people’s multiparty democracy was to uphold the decision taken by the majority, said Nepal. “However, chairman Oli has been ignoring the majority.”
Political forces against Oli in dilemma
It has already been a month since the Supreme Court reinstated the House of Representatives; the opposition parties in the parliament still look confused as to how they could oust Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli.
All the opposition parties were in the streets against the government after Prime Minister Oli dissolved the House on December 20, 2020, but now they are divided with a faction of the Janata Samajwadi Party-Nepal trying to join the Oli-led government, and another faction opposing the Oli. While the JSP-N is divided for and against the continuity of the Oli-led government, the Maoist Centre has not yet withdrawn its support given to the government.
PM Oli and his coteries looked confident that the government would survive in the support of the Mahanta Thakur and Rajendra Mahato faction of the JSP-N.
It is really intriguing that the JSP-N, the arch-rival of Oli, is now backing Oli. And this unnatural marriage between Oli and JSP-N is interpreted as a ploy to end the Constitution because JSP-N had launched a movement against the constitution during and after its promulgation in 2015. They were backed by India because India has not accepted the Constitution. And now Oli has emerged as a puppet of India to fulfil the goal of invalidating the Constitution, and JSP-N is preparing to back Oli in the Indian design.
Considering the volatile situation Nepali Congress president Sher Bahadur Deuba said on Tuesday in Dharan that he would not form a government or register a no-confidence motion against PM Oli.
Although the faction led by Ram Chandra Paudel has been exerting pressure on Deuba to register a no-confidence motion, the latter is not willingly fearing that the motion could fail or Deuba, if appointed new PM, will be unable to get the vote confidence.
However, if the SC corrected its controversial verdict to invalidate the NCP, then the Oli government will not survive.
Will JSP split?
The government and a faction of the Janata Samajbadi Party Nepal (JSP-N) on Tuesday held a meeting, which ended inclusively at Baluwatar.
The meeting held between Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, senior leaders of the ruling CPN-UML and senior leaders, including Mahnatha Thakur, of the JSP-N was said to be concluded agreeing to hold a further discussion.
When PM Oli did not show any interest to meet their demands, the meeting failed on Tuesday.
However, chairman Upendra Yadav and leader Dr. Baburam Bhattarai were unaware of the meeting. This shows the JSP-N created by unifying Samajwadi Party Nepal led by Upendra Yadav and Rastriya Janata Party Nepal of Mahanta Thakur after Oli tried to breach Yadav’s party in May last year. But now in less than a year, they are on the verge of the split also at the design of PM Oli.
