Bracing

Editorial

What Delhi designs are in the cards for our leadership will have been made clear by their sources in course of their medical meets in that Indian capital. Cease will surely not be an order easily digestible amidst this leadership since their support of activism enables the political clout to reach resources that must be disbursed to sustain their cadre. This compromise imminent since a change in direction of priorities is being signaled; tooth and nail strategies on the leaders’ part may seem suicidal. Bracing for change on their part will mean a reluctant back seat to be nursed for future use as possible leverage. Outside of direct participants on the streets wooed with considerable investments, a wary public become bystanders in the stage-managed street opposition. The funny part of the story is that even the government party is making investments in crowd management and the public are not awed. Indeed, it is the political establishment that is more aware of the imminent change and it is they who are bracing very hard in preparation for the change.

Outside of the leadership, the cadre who must provide the lip service in support of their leaders can no longer refrain from being aware that change is imminent. It is this section of the population that will be the most fluid. Indications that changes are due will be more convincing when the fluidity occurs. Cadre will slide and distance themselves from the current crop of leaders at the slightest chance of opportunities. The search for opportunities at the moment is difficult since the alternatives remain unclear. Moreover, cadre reach of alternative opportunities appears too remote or even unreachable at the moment. The spate of spoils has been so inexhaustible for the current crop, it is this fact that is provoking the change. The unavailability of such spoils slows the desertion process and is perhaps a hindrance to the creation of alternatives.

And, then, there is the lay public anticipating the change. Since any judicial decision on the constitutional fracas makes certain that the fracas currently on the streets will only heighten in intensity, bracing for change among the public come with hopes that violence is avoided. This would mean that anticipated change must come with the least violence. For this, resistance to change will be minimal among a leadership prone to violence with their monopoly of the cadre. The willingness minimal it is for sure that the change agent is stronger in order to overcome violence. Anachronism though it seems, it is the people who demand change and it is they who are the most uncertain and so brace themselves for changed the hardest. The fact is that it is they who are aware that the options are so limited and so dangerous.
