Will the ruling Nepal Communist Party (NCP) split as reported in the media? It is not easy to answer this question in ‘yes’ or ‘no’. It may split or remain united for a few more months with cracks.
The enmity between the two factions—one led by Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and another by Pushpa Kamal Dahal—is so intense that there is little chance to keep the party united. But at the same time, a split in the party could end the political career of the leaders of either faction. Thus, one can claim that the NCP will not divide either will it remain united.
Party general secretary and Finance Minister Bishnu Paudel Tuesday revealed how worse the situation in the party was. He said that the circumstances in his party had reached beyond what had been imagined, and efforts were underway to bring the situation on the right track.
Speaking at a press meet in Butwal, he said that boundary of dignity had been crossed in the party leadership, and it was essential to safeguard the party unity.
Recently, Prime Minister Oli held a meeting with Nepali Congress president Sher Bahadur Deuba and many interpreted the meeting was centred on power-sharing as PM Oli wanted to form a coalition government with NC by breaching NCP.
However, Paudel refuted the news and said that the meeting between Prime Minister and NCP chair KP Sharma Oli and NC president Deuba was usual and constitutional.
“The meeting was held to discuss the ongoing important issues such as appointments in the constitutional bodies and measures taken for the prevention and control of COVID-19,” he said.
On Monday, Prime Minister Oli had ruled out the possibility of change in the incumbent government. Addressing a gathering in Taplejung, he said the incumbent government will not change.
Stating that those who want to push the country towards instability are spreading the illusion of opposition to the government and change of government, Prime Minister Oli said that the current government will not change under any circumstances.
It was again reported that PM Oli had found that it would be more difficult to convince Madhav Kumar Nepal than Dahal, which means the factions led by Nepal and Dahal stand together against Oli.
Moreover, when the government has become weak due to intra-party feud in the ruling party, Foreign Ministers of India and China are arriving in Nepal one after another. Their visits are also linked with the growing dispute in the ruling party.
