A year has elapsed since President of China Xi Jinping paid a rare official visit to Nepal and signed different agreements.
President Xi visited Nepal on October 12 -13 in 2019.
However, over a year many of the agreements have not come into implementation. Even in BRI partnership, Nepal has moved in snail’s pace, as a result, no visible development has been seen.
It is not known what has delayed in realising the agreements signed during Xi’s visit a year ago. However, the Nepali authorities look reluctant in pushing forward many of the agreements, probably in the influence of the southern neighbour and the westerners. Otherwise, the agreements inked during such a high level visit should have been realised in a year.
Although no concrete progress has been made in implementing the agreements inked with China, politicians and diplomats have been stressing on increasing cooperation and connectivity between Nepal and China.
They said that railway connectivity should be the prime agenda of Nepal-China cooperation.
“Nepal-China friendship is multidimensional, as it is exchanged at the level of people, business, culture, politics and geography. We can learn many things from the Chinese model of development, the particularly socialist approach of management,” a senior leader of Nepal Communist Party and former prime minister Madhav Kumar Nepal said while releasing a book ‘President Xi’s Nepal Visit: A Pictorial Guide’ published by the Nepal-China Media Forum.
The book was published to mark the 1st anniversary of the visit of President Xi Jinping.
Nepal should be able to take maximum benefit from the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), avoiding undue conditions of the donor countries and debt trap, leader Nepal said.
Former Chief Secretary and Nepal’s former ambassador to China Leela Mani Paudyal said that the Chinese President’s visit to Nepal has boosted Nepal’s confidence in terms of providing security to the VVIPs and other areas of international relations and cooperation.
He also stressed railway connectivity with China which would definitely uplift Nepal’s economic condition and help maintain independence.
