Cases of COVID-19 have been rising rapidly in Nepal in recent days, with a single-day spike of cases crossing 5,000 on Saturday. Likewise, on Monday 4047 cases were detected and on Tuesday 3556 cases.
When the national tally jumped to 115,358 with 35915 active cases, the Kathmandu Valley has 44072 cases. Kathmandu district alone has 35994 cases, the highest cases in a single district.
Of the 3,556 new cases detected on Tuesday, 2,129 were recorded in the Kathmandu Valley, and of the 2129 new cases of the valley, 1,746 cases were detected in Kathmandu district, 167 in Bhaktapur and 216 in Lalitpur.
This data showed that Kathmandu has become the new hotspot of the COVID-19 in Nepal, thanks to the crowd in market places and violation of health protocols by masses. The government, however, seems not serious about reducing the rising cases of the virus in Kathmandu and elsewhere as the graph of cases on a constant rise in other districts of the country. Morang, Sunsari, Makwanpur, Surkhet, Kathmandu, Lalitpur, Bhaktapur, Chitwan, Dang, Banke and Rupandehi are worst hit with more than 500 cases. Nothing has been done to control the spike by the government except for requesting people to wear masks and wash hands. Instead, it allowed the buses to carry passengers in full capacity, probably in the pressure of the transport entrepreneurs.
Going by the rising cases of virus and reluctance on the part of the government to introduce new measures to control the spread of the virus, one can conclude that the government has surrendered to the virus. Otherwise, it should introduce tough measures to contain it as the United Kingdom did recently. However, one positive aspect is that the government has increased the test as the daily tests has risen to 15,000 on average from 10,000 average last week. With more tests, the cases have also gone up. For example, 15,577 Real-Time Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR) tests were conducted in 24 hours on Tuesday.
According to the Ministry, there are 35,915 active cases of COVID-19 of which, 15,048 patients are in institutional isolations while 20,867 are in home isolation, receiving treatment. Some 4,795 people are currently under quarantine centres across the nation. Although the government said earlier that it would impose lockdown if the active cases reach 25,000, it has not imposed it when the cases are close to 40,000.
Of the active cases, 307 patients are admitted to the intensive care units (ICU) of hospitals and 66 are receiving treatment with ventilator support as of Tuesday evening.
According to the latest update, Nepal has now registered 78,780 cases of recoveries and the recovery rate is at 68.3 per cent.
