Kathmandu, 20 September: As acute shortage of medical paraphernalia including limited number of beds in hospitals has adversely hampered the fight against corona virus pandemic in the country, the government, misusing the state coffer has spent almost Rs 100 million in medals, awards and decorations, to be bestowed upon personalities of cross-section of Nepali society for their ‘outstanding contributions to the nation’.
On the contrary, the medals and honours are awarded arbitrarily to the persons including a driver of the Chief Secretary Lok Darshan Regmi and an official who decided to hike his pay himself. Leaving aside a few persons, among the 594 people recommended by the government for the award, majority of the individuals are close to the ruling Nepal Communist Party cadres, to be specific, very close to Prime Minister Khadga Oli. Those who wrote paeans for him are the ones who are receiving the awards. According to media reports, self-centric persons and people without least contribution to the nation are chosen, drawing widespread flak.
