The Nepal Communist Party which swept the elections three years ago with the slogan of forming a socialism-oriented government has been promoting nepotism and corruption right from the day it was formed.
Recently the government made a move to appoint Deputy Prime Minister Ishwor Pokhrel’s corrupt samdhi (co-father) Upendra Koirala as chairman of Nepal Rashtriya Banijya Bank.
Dr Koirala, who had earned a bad name as a corrupt man has been enjoying key posts for years because of nexus with the powerful man and capability to collect money for the leaders. The government to appoint Dr Koirala as the chairperson of Rashtriya Banijya Bank, nominated him as members of the board of directors. .
A meeting of the board of directors to be held a fortnight ago was to officially announce his appointment. But the meeting was postponed due to opposition from the public through social sites.
Koirala is a co-father-in-law (his son’s father-in-law) of Deputy Prime Minister Ishwar Pokharel. He has already worked in several government bodies as a political appointee, earning a lot of ill repute.
Koirala was appointed the executive chairman of Nepal Oil Corporation when Pokharel was the minister for commerce and supplies.
The government formed after the 2006 People’s Movement had appointed him as the vice-chairperson of the then Higher Secondary Education Board. After the Public Accounts Committee in Parliament launched an investigation into reports of his involvement in embezzlement, he was forced to resign.
But again, the government made him the vice-chancellor of Mid-Western University. There also, he was accused of corruption.
