Nepali Congress is not likely to hold its 14th general convention in February next year, and the coronavirus spread could be a good excuse for party president Sher Bahadur Deuba to defer the date of the general convention.
Deuba, under whose leadership the Nepali Congress turned into a tiny opposition party from a giant ruling party, wants to defer the general convention further due to his depleting popularity. Earlier, he extended his term by a year which is expiring in February next year.
After losing the trust of the party leaders and cadres, he has been trying to become party president with the help of new entrants. He has recently welcome Sunil Bahadur Thapa, leader of Rashtriya Prajaantra Party and son of late Surya Bahadur Thapa. Three years ago, Bijaya Gachchhadra joined the NC after staying away from the party for over a decade, and Gachchhadar will be a big help for Deuba to become president again. Before welcoming Thapa, he expelled Puskar Ojha and Govinda Raj Joshi from the party. Ojha was expelled believing that he had a role for the defeat of Arzoo Rana, Deuba’s wife in 2017 general elections from Kailali. However, the bitter reality was that NC suffered the humiliating defeat in its stronghold of Sudurpashcim because of the candidacy of Arzoo.
Now Deuba has been busy making appointments in the party departments, which should have been done within two months after his election to the party president. His move was to woo the voters, but that could turn counterproductive for Deuba himself as many cadres and leaders have been irked by the unethical move which also contradicts the party statute. The rival factions have challenged Deuba to correct the move.
