SC losses trust, by releasing Ranjan Koirala

By Our Reporter

The Supreme Court has been dragged into controversy for releasing former Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of the Armed Police Force (APF) Ranjan Koirala from the Dilli Bazaar-based jail on Thursday.

Koirala was serving life imprisonment for killing his wife Gita Dhakal in 2011. However, after spending eight years and six months behind the bar for murdering his wife, former Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of the Armed Police Force (APF) Ranjan Koirala was freed from the Dilli Bazaar-based jail on Thursday based on a verdict of Chief Justice Cholendra Shumsher Rana and Justice Tej Bahadur KC.

Koirala was released from the jail this morning upon a verdict of July 18, 2020 of the Supreme Court, after completing eight years and six months jail.

He was sentenced a lifetime imprisonment upon the order of the then Appellate Court, Patan, and the District Court of Kathmandu on January 22, 2012.

SC’s verdict mentioned that the lifetime jail sentence announced against Koirala became costly for him.’ The SC also termed that the order of the Appellate and the District Court relevant but the lifetime jail term is given to him as inappropriate.

However, the decision was challenged and the SC agreed to review it. A joint division bench of justices Bam Kumar Shrestha, Prakash Kumar Dhungana and Kumar Regmi decided to review the apex court’s decision as per the review petition registered by the Office of the Attorney General.

The latest decision of the SC has eroded the trust of court among the people.
