Dependence in all sectors

On/Off The Record

By P.R. Pradhan

Unfortunate to state, Nepal is a foreign dependent nation, moreover, the country is India dependent in all sectors. Every year the rate of dependency is increasing due to the visionless rulers here. Even talking about movies or songs or television serials or media, Nepalis are highly dependent on India.

I am sure, Indians are less interested in Nepali movies, songs, television serials, and even media! Even when one Bollywood artist becomes ill or dies, there will be big coverage in Nepali media, on the other hand, when Nepali prime minister or leaders visit India, there is hardly any coverage in the Indian media. Why not we try to reciprocate in the same manner, I am surprised!

Nepal is a culturally very rich country. We have very good songs, we have enough television serials and our movies. We neglect them, in the meantime, we watch and enjoy Indian channels.

The result of highly Indian dependency has been seen from the planned attack on Nepal and the character assassination of our senior-most leaders. Since Nepal published a new political map of the country by incorporating the Kalapani-Limpiyadhura territory, the Indians have become furious and especially the Indian media have started to defame Nepal. So far, the Indian news channels are advanced in disseminating false propaganda. Earlier, Pakistan was the Indian media target, then China also became the target and now Nepal has become the Indian target. Viewers believe, this is the media propaganda created by the Indian rulers.

Kudos to the television channel distributors that at least they have stopped distribution of some Indian news TV channels. They should be permanently banned if we wish to promote our TV channels. If the government, in the name of freedom and right to information, is unable to ban the foreign channels, at least, it should implement the clean-feed policy. We are compelled to watch Indian advertisements on the Indian TV channels. This is a bonus for the advertisers who are paying a huge amount to the Indian TV channels. If the government will implement the clean-feed policy, such advertisements will not be aired in Nepal and our local advertisement agency will get billions of rupees worth business and local TV channels will get advertisements. At a time, when India has restricted Chinese TikTok to promote its own app, let the Nepalis try to stop watching Indian television channels and serials to promote our own TV channels!

Dependence or self-reliant?

Patriotism is deeply linked with self-reliance. We cannot stand with pride against foreign forces if we are dependent on them. That is why the People’s Review team is always stressing on making the nation self-reliant in all the sectors. Our so-called leaders and so-called intellectuals are talking about exporting electricity to India and other countries. They are distributing big dreams to the people. The ground reality is that India will purchase Nepali electricity if the price is too cheap. We don’t believe that we can make a profit by exporting electricity to India. We have thus argued for focusing on our investment on big hydropower projects, generating electricity at a cheap price, and supplying electricity to industries at a low price which will make our industrial products cheaper being able to compete in the international market.

If we introduced e-vehicles and electronic trains for public transportation, we can substitute the import of petro-products by saving the expenditure of foreign currency in purchasing these items. If the leaders have had the vision, they would make efforts to establish e-vehicles assembling plants. Unfortunately, our leaders, who are serving foreign interests, have imposed a heavy tax on imports of e-vehicles, which has discourage operation of electricity operating vehicles, in the meantime, it has encouraged import of petro-products.

I am an admirer of Mahabir Pun. Without any encouragement from the government – perhaps, he is facing humiliation – has established the National Invention Center. During the Covid-19 pandemic hit period, his Center was busy in producing personal protective equipment (PPE), repairing ventilator and other equipment. He is also engaged in transforming petrol, diesel operating vehicles into battery operating one. He has asked the government to transform all the government vehicles into the battery operating one. He has also suggested renovating all dumped vehicles into battery operating vehicles which can be done at a very cheap price. Unfortunately, the government has not responded to his idea.

As Nepal has sufficient fertile land, we can grow all types of agro-products within the country and we can become self-reliant in agro-products. In the past, Nepal was the agro-products exporting country, with some honest efforts and good government policy, we can be the agro-products exporting country again.

Let our political leaders make small but significant efforts to transform Nepal as a self-reliant nation!
