Covid-19 spread alarms the Valley; Government fails to contain COVID-19

By Our Reporter

Despite imposing lockdown for over 100 days, the government has miserably failed to control the spread of coronavirus in the country. As the government did not implement the lockdown effectively, the virus has now reached in all 77 districts with cases crossing 16,000 and deaths reaching 35.

Instead of working honestly and strictly to prevent the COVID-19 spread, the government resorted to corruption as many powerful in government took the crisis as an opportunity to make money. The anti-COVID-19 drive marred by corruption right from the beginning also suffered mismanagement of the quarantines, many of which turned into death traps. These were the poorly managed crowded quarantines from where the virus spread rapidly.

When the virus fear was high, the government resorted to amend the constitution and kidnap the lawmakers to breach parties. And of late, the ruling party is in an unending row distracting the attention of the government from the COVID-19 crisis.

This all has resulted in the rising cases of virus even in the Kathmandu Valley, where most of the hospitals have halted their services after detecting virus in more patients. Kathmandu Valley has become more vulnerable to virus. Gangalal Hopsital was the last to halt its services.

As of Wednesday morning, the Kathmandu Valley has 267 cases of virus. Of them, 175 are from Kathmandu, 41 from Lalitpur and 43 from Bhaktapur districts. And many of them had come to Kathmandu on rescue flights from various countries.

According to the Ministry of Health and Population, 204 new cases of COVID-19 were found in 24 hours on Tuesday from 6,133 Polymerase Chain Reactions (PCR) tests.

Currently, there are 8,634 active cases of COVID-19 nationwide while 7, 499 returned home by beating the virus. The total cases in Nepal now stand at 16,168.

Fortunately, virus has not spread in the community till date. The Ministry of Health and Population confirmed this on Tuesday. According to it, 99 per cent of the COVID-19 cases in Nepal are asymptomatic and of them 97 per cent are imported cases.

“Of the around 16,000 infected cases so far, 99 % have no symptoms. They are infected, but they do not have symptoms, so we have taken this as a different scenario from many other countries” said Dr. Bashudev Pandey, Director of Epidemiology and Disease Control Division (EDCD) of MoHP, at the daily press briefing on Tuesday.
