Nepal and China have agreed to initiate feasibility study of the Kathmandu-Kerung railway service. Authorities of the two countries signed an agreement to this effect during a meeting in Kathmandu on November 26.
Authorities of both the countries had decided to expedite the process of constructing the railway line during the state visit of Chinese President Xi Jinping to Nepal in October.
A 21-member Chinese delegation, which had arrived in Nepal to implement the decision taken during Xi’s visit, signed an agreement during the meeting to initiate the feasibility study.
Representatives of the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transportation and officials from China’s National Railway Administration divided the responsibilities during the meeting.
According to sources at the ministry, the Chinese side will conduct aerial mapping and geographical study while the Nepali side will prepare the environment impact assessment report and provide security to the Chinese team.
Director General of the Railway Department, Balaram Mishra, said that the Chinese side would prepare the detailed project report at its own expense.
The Chinese said has maintained that it needs to study the project in detail as it is being constructed in one of the most challenging terrains of the world. Similarly, the Chinese team agreed to inspect the route of Kathmandu-Lumbini railway.
