Kathmandu, 19 November:Journalists have taken to the streets to protest against the classification of newspapers by the Press Council Nepal (PCN)in the fiscal year of 2074/75. They have demanded impartiality in the classification process by the Council, an autonomous and independent media regulatory body set up by the government.
A struggle committee has been formed in this regard, and the committee and Kathmandu, Lalitpur and Bhaktapur branches of the Federation of Nepali Journalists submitted a memorandum to the chairperson of the Council, Kishor Shrestha. They have also warned of a series of protests until correction in the classification is made. Effectiveness of the Council has been questioned as the concerned authorities have been questioning the role of the Council and rechecking committee assigned to do annual classification of newspapers.
