PM Oli preparing for “emergency rule”?

Kathmandu, 28 July: Jana Aastha vernacular weekly has reported that the President can even impose emergency rule.

Citing on the recent talks between PM Oli and RJP leader Laxamanlal Karna, the weekly has quoted PM Oli’s remarks, “They (Opposition parties in the Federal Parliament) have not understood the power of the President. The President can even impose emergency rule”.

Oli further said to Karna, “Should they humiliate and insult the President having such rights?”

The Weekly further states, RJP and Federal Socialist Forum are engaged in unification talks. This is not a favourable scenario for PM Oli’s government. In the meantime, PM Oli, by inviting RJP leader in his bedroom, is sharing his internal feelings. It has brought a political jolt.

PM might have felt that nothing is wrong and everything is okay. Meanwhile, PM Oli, at a meeting with senior leader of NCP, Madhav Kumar Nepal, had said, “I am initiating some serous steps,” which is also meaningful.

If the “serious steps” is related to stepping back from the party unification process, while doing so, the party is registered at the Election Commission. The party cannot split without securing 40 percent of the members of the Federal Parliament and party central committee. Dissolving the parliament is a very critical issue. If so, what could be the “serious steps”?

Currently, dispute is existed between the two co-chairmen of the party.

In previous week’s meeting between the two chairmen, when Oli opined, “Whatever be the previous agreement, the line of People’s Multiparty Proletariat has to be continued.” Prachanda was astonished from Oli’s such remarks. When the same was repeated on last Friday’s meeting, Prachanda had protested to Oli saying that if all issues (agreements endorsed during the unification move) are going to be scrapped!

If the PM is under the pressure from the party workers, Prachanda is not alone. He may also face pressure from his friends. If dispute between the two chairmen will intensify, chances of split of the party cannot be ignored as split and division are the fundamental characteristic of the communist party of Nepal, the Weekly has analysed.

After the Friday talks between the two chairmen in Baluatar, the same evening, the meeting of former Maoist leaders was held at Prachanda’s residence in Khumaltar. The agendas of the talks were, whether to move forward along with the former UML or to initiate separation move or to wait and see for the time being!
