Opposing the practice of male-dominated panels, that remain widely prevalent in programmes and events in the country with women averaging only one or zero conference speakers, a movement called, “ Say No to Male Panel’ was initiated in the country on Tuesday, probably being influenced by the Me To campaign.
The campaign was officially launched by Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Ishwor Pokhrel by giving his signature in the campaign paper with a commitment that he would not take part in or host panels comprising only men.
Expressing his solidarity, Minister Pokhrel asserted that he supported the campaign from his heart.
Vice-Chair at UN CEDAW Committee Bandana Rana, who is the main campaigner of this drive, said such practice was prevalent not only in Nepal, but it was a global trend that women were sparsely represented or only men speakers were on the panel in conferences.
The campaign was jointly initiated by Saathi and Men Engage Alliance.
