Govt to collect Rs 1 trillion revenue

By Our Reporter
Nepal’s is a small economy. But the government of Nepal is going to collect Rs.1 trillion revenue for the first time. Finance Minister Dr Yuba Raj Khatiwada has proposed to increase the annual revenue to 13 digits.
However, the target looks ambitious, Minister Khatiwada has prepared a plan to meet target.
Nepal’s revenue had reached Rs. 7 billion, the highest amount in the fiscal year 2007/2008.
Thirteen years after that, revenue is going to be more than 1 trillion in the next fiscal year.
But when the government gives priority to collect only revenue without delivering, it may irk the people, who have already been fed up by double taxation by the local levels and federal governments. When good governance has been impossible, the people will think that major portion of the revenue goes to the pockets of the politicians and corrupt bureaucrats. Therefore, the government needs to instill the feeling in the people that the revenue will be used for the betterment of the people.
