Elephant creates terror in Jhapa

By Our Reporter
A herd of wild elephants invaded a settlement at Arjundhara Municipality-5 in Jhapa, terrorising the life. According to ward chair Dhyan Bahadur Bharati, the parade of giant animals including their babies has occupied a sugarcane field amidst the residential area since this morning.
There are around two dozen of houses and a basic school in the settlement. Some 150 students are enrolled at the school. The herd takes a rest at daytime and walks around the village in search of food during night.
A squad from the District Forest Office, Jhapa has been mobilised for the safety of settlement. Similarly, separate teams from the Armed Police Force (APF) and Nepal Police are guarding the settlement and school. The school lies in a distance of 300 meters from the sugarcane field.
As locals continue to throng the site to see the animals, there is a risk that the herd could run riot, posing safety threats to the entire settlement. A large number of wild elephants from India enter eastern Nepal via the Bahundangi point mainly during this season. They damage crops and sometimes kill the people as well.
