Price hike before budget: Tomato prices double

By Our Reporter
Signs have it that the people will be marred by the price rise this year even before the tabling of the new fiscal budget. Generally, price hike used to occur only after the tabulation of the budget. But this year, market price has skyrocketed even before the budget announcement.
The government has already announced to increase the salaries of the employees and social allowance to the elderly and disabled. As such, after the budget the market price is sure to skyrocket, making life of the poor people more difficult.
The biggest impact of price rise was felt in green vegetables. According to chairman of the Federation of Vegetables and Frutit entrepreneurs, production of vegetables has dropped due to regular rains and hailstone this year. As a result, supply of the vegetable has increased. Now a kg of tomato costs Rs. 120, which is more than the double of its normal price. Even the vegetables imported from India have become dearer this year.
