NA withdraws controversial Guthi Bill

The Guthi Bill-2019 that had pushed the government into unexpected crisis, was unanimously withdrawn from the National Assembly meeting on Tuesday.
Minister for Land Management Cooperatives and Poverty Alleviation Padma Kumari Aryal tabled a proposal to withdraw the bill.
The bill has drawn severe criticism from several cultural groups in Kathmandu, prompting the people to launch series of protests in Kathmandu.
Angry people as well as lawmakers of even the ruling parties had threatened to unseat the government if the Bill was no withdrawn. The government on last Tuesday had announced the withdrawal of the bill fearing the mass meeting scheduled for last Wednesday would shake the government.
Chairperson of National Assembly Ganesh Prasad Timalsina announced the withdrawal of the bill in the NA meeting.
Minister Aryal, however, utilised the time to defend the bill stating that the bill was dragged into controversy by spreading rumours against the bill that it could destroy culture, tradition and religion of the people.
She argued that the bill actually was at par the Constitution with clear provisions of protecting the religions and cultures.
