Government to add 12 more holidays but not on Push 27

By Our Reporter
The government is now mulling over adding 12 holidays which were trimmed by it 10 months back.
Stating that the high numbers of holidays were hindering the administration services, the government had cut several holidays immediately after it assumed office. But it failed to stick in its decisions when various ethnic and religious organisations exerted pressure on the government to give them holidays during their festivals.
The recommended holidays are for Kirati festival Ubhauli and Udhauli; Islamic festivals Eid al-Fitr; Bakra-eid, and Muhammad Day; Christmas; Tamu Lhosar; Sonam Lhosar; Gyalbo Lhosar; Chhat Festival; Rishi Panchami (women only); Maghi festiva and Janai Purnima.
However, the government has not included Push 27, the birth anniversary of national hero Prithvi Narayan Shah who had unified Nepal, in the list of the holidays, hinting that the government wanted to please the western powers.
Prior to the 2006 political movement, the government used to give the holiday on Push 27 as National Unity Day, but the government stopped giving the holiday after 2006 as the movement was orchestrated by the western power against the king and Hinduism. Of course, Nepali people had not come to the street to abolish the monarchy and change the Hindu Kingdom of Nepal into secular federal republic, they only wanted restoration of democracy. However, the leaders promoted by the westerners deceived the people by making Nepal a secular republic. As the leaders were still protected by the same power, they did not dare to show respect to the unifier of Nepal by announcing holidayon push 27.
No matter what slogan of nationality they raise, the leaders in the government look just puppet of the westerners; it has been evident from their biased attitude towards the Great King Prithvi Narayan Shah.
Now the government is preparing to add the 12 public holidays in the upcoming Nepali year 2076 BS. A taskforce formed to review the public holidays has recommended the government to add 12 public holidays considering the festivals of various communities and ethnic groups living in the country.
Home Minister Ram Bahadur Thapa, Urban Development Minister Mohammad Ishtiyaq Rai, and Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation Minister Rabindra Prasad Adhikari are the members of the taskforce.
