By Rabi Raj ThapaThe United Nations General Assembly (UNGA)looked like a “Kumbha Mela” where national representatives of the 194 member states (including Palestine) met and addressed and highlighted global cooperation on multiple fronts.Besides, there were grumblings, high-sounding words, blame games, aspirations and assurance to reform the UN institutions itself, and demand to limit the hegemonic monopoly of five member countries in the UN Security Council. In principle, US President Joe Biden emphasized the need for multilateral cooperation to address climate change andreduce geopolitical tensions while strongly supporting Israel with money weapons. Chinese Foreign Minister highlighted China’s commitment to peaceful development through dialogue opposing actions that exacerbate global tension. At the same time China’s military build-up is seen by the US as a threat and bone of contention in global peace.Russian Foreign Minister warned against NATO’s expansion and condemned Western support for Ukraine. Member countries of the European Union also focus on climate and cyber-security type of things, but it also talked too much about strengthening NATO and its stance against Russia which is now overshadowed by the dominance of far-right in their national politics and European Parliament. Leaders from the Global South and leaders from the developing nations highlighted the urgent need for financial and climate support. They all strongly advocated for global cooperation on climate resilience, urging wealthier nations to take responsibility for their carbon footprints. The most important and significant development is the possibility of the expansion of the permanent members of the UN Security Council in which many countries advocated strongly for India and two African countries along with Brazil, Japan and Germany. Kenya’s President William Samoei Ruto strongly put “today’s global peace, security and stability are increasingly under threat with polarizing narrative, organized crime, war, stockpiling of WMD and many other issues. Today global revelry is intensifying, successive positive peace initiatives are all-time low, negative coalition and tension among the global multilateral system are at all-time high”, which is the reality of today’s world. In a real sense, many speakers come to UNGAjust to wash away their sins or rinse their guilty conscience. Many countries spent their time criticizing their rivals. Some other countries like Nepal spent weeks just to preach and philosophize in broken English and spent the rest of the time roaming around while their country at home was in flood and fire, disease, poverty and hunger. Maybe ten long days are too expensive in terms of time, money and international issues for contemporary VVIPs of Nepal today. Today, withtechnology and Artificial Intelligence, defense relationships in terms of the acquisition of military overheads (Military Industrial Complex) around the world are alarmingly increasing. Today, technology, defense relationship and acquisition of military overheads, Indo-Pacific and QUAD may become a game-changer in the Asia and Pacific region. The emergence of growing power and influence of the Global South is about to challenge and change existing, rebalancing the UN.Regarding SAARC, Afghanistan was left out of the UNGA and other member countries except India spent most of their time reiterating their unfounded national achievements concealing their domestic maladies. Leaving UNGA official business apart, thewalk-out protest during Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's presence was a unique gesture to protest Israel’s atrocities and use of force in Gaza and the West Bank over Palestinian people. World political and strategic issues apart,Indian Diasporas’ love and respect for Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modifrom airport to hotel and his “Namaste US” were noteworthy. On the contrary, thecancellation of Nepal’s P.M. and Deputy PM with NRN and Nepali community on security region was surprising and shocking news. Whatever the case, UNGA is a landmark where great leaders show the world where they stand and try to direct the world order amidst great dissensions and contradictions.
