Kathmandu, September 30: The mineral water sold by about a dozen water industries in the Valley has proved unfit for consumption. When the Kathmandu Metropolitan City monitored and collected samples and tested them in the laboratory, it was found that the industries were selling substandard water that people should not drink. The KMC said, coliforms (wastes of humans and animals) were found in the mineral water supplied in jars. The Kathmandu Metropolitan City has banned the sale of water produced by 11 industries after the water industry was found to be grossly negligent towards human health. Departmental Chief of Kathmandu Metropolitan City, Dr. Awadhesh said, "The water industries are selling substandard water with coliform in jars." Jha said, "coliform affects human health". The Metropolitan Municipality has reported that some water industries have committed serious negligence affecting human health. Doctors say that water with coliform bacteria causes problems, including nausea, chills, and dizziness. In the laboratory, the water samples of 11 out of 22 brands collected by the Kathmandu Metropolitan City were found to be 'faecal coliform'. Coliforms are a group of bacteria. According to the food quality standards, the coliforms in the treated drinking water should be zero. The element found in the water of eleven industries has become unfit for drinking due to the presence of faecal coliform. Madhav Timilsina, president of the Consumer Rights Research Forum, said that 50 percent of the water industries monitored by the Metropolitan City are unfit to consume water, which is clear that they have seriously neglected human health. "The water industry has been processing without meeting the standards," Timilsina said. "Strict action should be taken against the industry for selling substandard water," he demanded.   The KMC has imposed a fine of Rs 2.5 lakh on 11 industries for selling substandard water. The Metropolitan Municipality has said that the water industry can be sold only if the faecal coliform should be be zero. According to the Metropolitan City, action has been taken in accordance with the Kathmandu Metropolitan City Market Management and Monitoring Act, 2077 for the sale and distribution of non-consumable water. The Pancharatna Group is at the forefront of the water industry selling substandard water. Pancharatna has been selling water in jars of the Fresh Drop brand. Similarly, coliform has been found in the water of Aqua Piece of Peace Spring Water Prali Tokha, Aqua Kolbateshwar Brand of Uttarabahini Food and Beverage Prali Kageshwari Manohara, Aqua DB, a product of Aqua Sundari Industry of Gokarneshwor, Aqua, a product of Snow Cube Drinking Water of Kageshwari Manohara-6, Cube Process Drinking Water, a product of Stupa Industry of Gokarneshwor and Aqua Mild Brand of Moonlight Spring Mineral Water of Gokarneshwor. Similarly, the water of Akwa Kapan, Kosi Mineral Water Industry, Akwa SNS Weaverage Prali Tokha, Jabmulinga Group Industries Prali Tarakeshwar's Akwa Tridev brand of water produced by MK Mineral Water Industry is also unfit for drinking. The workers were accused of selling substandard water. Earlier, the Department of Food Technology and Quality Control had also found problems in the water of the jar in the monitoring and testing done at different times. About one-fourth of the food safety and quality issues in the department in the fiscal year 2080/81 were related to treated water. Not only the quality, water industries have also been selling water in small, carved and crushed jars. The level is not clearly mentioned in the water jar.
