With the postponement of the BIMSTEC summit of the leaders of seven mostly South Asian countries, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli is now preparing to go to New York to attend the United Nations General Assembly which will be held from September 10 to 28. PM Oli may address the UNAG on September 23 or 24.
Thailand was hosting BIMSTEC on September 3-4. However, the Asian Kingdom postponed it until after a new administration is formed, its foreign ministry said on August 23.
Thailand currently has a caretaker government following a court's dismissal of Srettha Thavisin as Premier last week and his successor, Paetongtran Shinawatra, has not formed a new cabinet. The Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) includes Thailand, India, Myanmar, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Bhutan and its leaders meet every two years for a summit.
After the postponement of the BISTEC summit, efforts are also underway to arrange PM Oli's India visit. Foreign Minister Arzu Rana is reportedly working to manage the visit. However, as Indian leaders and the people have no positive attitude towards PM Oli, his India visit before UNGA looks impossible.
Nevertheless, the Foreign Ministry is trying to arrange a sideline meeting between Oli and Indian PM Narendra Modi during the UNGA in New York.
At the same time, Nepal is making efforts for the SAARC foreign minister-level meeting at the sideline of the UNGA.
SAARC has been left lifeless because of the escalating enmity between India and Pakistan. As India said it would not attend the SAARC Summit hosted by Pakistan, the 19th SAARC Summit scheduled for 2016 has not been held yet. Nepal hosted the 18th SAARC Summit in November 2014.
